Use Your Next Beauty Purchase To Support These

George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery should all be here. And the fact that they aren’t speak to our country’s inexcusable culture of police brutality and racial injustice. While you might feel helpless, you’re not—it’s more important than ever to take action. One way to do that is by donating to organizations fighting for racial injustice. Black Lives Matter, Black Youth Project 100, and Color of Change are great places to start, and this list of bail funds is an excellent way to help local protest efforts. But beyond protests, there’s still a lot of work to do to uplift Black voices and protect Black communities. And an easy way to do that is with your purchasing dollars. Supporting Black-owned beauty brands not only puts money in the pockets of Black entrepreneurs, but also lets them know that consumers care about representation. So if you’re looking for your next great beauty buy, take our Top Shelf subjects’ recommendations and check out these brands. It’s a small step, sure, but still an important one.

And Small Brand Solutions

Curls Dynasty

Loved by Jessica Clemons
The rave review: “There’s this new line that I use called Curls Dynasty—I really like the packaging. With natural hair, if you’re doing it when you’re showering, you need products that can get to your scalp. With this stuff, they put it in a spout so I can get it onto my scalp, which is the most important part. Then they have this Organic Oil Blend that you put on at the ends, and that gets the hair shiny, but it’s also a really nice natural conditioner. The line is really good.” —Jessica Clemons

Jane Carter Solution

Loved by Diarrha Ndiaye, Kitty Kash, Kilo Kish
The rave review: “There’s this Jane Carter Solution—it’s basically a spritz, but it’s a leave-in conditioner that kind of spritz in your hair and revitalize it during that blowout session. I’ll spritz that if I need to give it some super love.” —Diarrha Ndiaye

Curl Theory

Loved by Hawa Hassan
The rave review: “I just started using Curl Theory a few weeks ago, and before that I was using Garnier or something—things that just didn’t work for my hair, because they had sulfates in it. My hair started to get really hard and dry, and I couldn’t figure it out. Since I’ve switched, my hair has been so much better.” —Hawa Hassan

Derma Organics

Then, I try to find a line that I like and use all of their products together, because I have learned that the chemistry of a product is made to work with its brothers and sisters. That’s hard, too.” —Logan Browning

Oyin Handmade

Loved by Sinikiwe Dhliwayo, Doreen St. Felix
The rave review: “’ll also use Oyin Handmade–they have this leave-in moisture thing, and I’ll put that on after the conditioner, and then kind of twist my hair up and put a head wrap or scarf on. And then, if it’s the weekend, I’ll just kind of wear that all weekend.” —Sinikiwe Dhliwayo

Alaffia

Loved by Folasade Adeoso, Ashley Graham, Dee Poku
The rave review: “[At night] I use this Alaffia moringa soap—moringa is this West African plant that’s like a super plant. You can get it at any health store—I get it at Whole Foods, or even small, local stores because it’s a fair-trade African company. Proceeds go to their projects they have in Togo, and I like to buy it knowing that the proceeds go to something meaningful in this world.” —Folasade Adeoso

Now, I either cleanse with the True Calm Rosehip Cleanser from her brand. Then, I tone with the Epi.logic Even Balance toner. After that is Epi.logic’s Daily Dose vitamin C serum, otherwise known as the goods. The combo of vitamins C, E, B5, ferulic acid, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide makes my skin bounce and glow. The rave review: “Sometimes I wear makeup while I play—I did it during the World Cup because the cameras were always on us, but for club not so much. If I’m wearing it on the field, I try not to apply too much. I’ll do a little Fenty foundation, and I’ll put a dab of Fenty powder over it to make it stick more. It’s done very well so far. But really, I’m Fenty everything. Trophy Wife, Gloss Bomb, Stunna Lip Paint, Fenty primer, the Galaxy palette.
